[00:00:00 - 00:00:10] I wish I had some of that stuff. [00:00:10 - 00:00:18] Well, I was surprised to hear McLuhan invoked so many times today, and I will do it again. [00:00:18 - 00:00:27] McLuhan had an idea of what he called the global village, and the global village is coming to be. [00:00:27 - 00:00:35] This is what the crisis that is being presented to us as a crisis in communism is. [00:00:35 - 00:00:40] It isn't a crisis for communism. Communism is going first. [00:00:40 - 00:00:46] But what it is, is the death knell for centralized structure. [00:00:46 - 00:00:55] [applause] [00:00:55 - 00:01:03] If you think what we've been through in the past year is something, wait till you see what's on the agenda. [00:01:03 - 00:01:12] And I don't mean great CNN feed from Moscow as the Soviet Union turns into 15 independent republics. [00:01:12 - 00:01:15] I mean what's going to happen here. [00:01:15 - 00:01:31] Because what is so terrifying about Gorbachev from the point of view of the powers that be, is that he models a leader who can't say, "We did it wrong." [00:01:31 - 00:01:43] [applause] [00:01:43 - 00:01:51] Baker was on one of the talk shows after one of these "We did it wrong" statements by Gorbachev, [00:01:51 - 00:02:00] and they said to him, "Well, under what circumstances would an official of the United States government admit a mistake?" [00:02:00 - 00:02:09] And he said, "Well, you don't understand. You see, we have collective decision-making apparatus, and hence, we don't make mistakes." [00:02:09 - 00:02:11] [laughter] [00:02:11 - 00:02:23] So I think that to return to McLuhan for a moment, what's happening is, as Gates said in his poem, "The center does not hold. [00:02:23 - 00:02:26] Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." [00:02:26 - 00:02:35] But as fans of chaos, we should know that this mere anarchy is the incarnation of our goddess, Discordia, [00:02:35 - 00:02:44] who is going to pull them behind the structure that is oppressing everybody. [00:02:44 - 00:02:52] What I see happening, and it was touched upon by others here, is this intensification of local identification, [00:02:52 - 00:03:05] bio-regionalism, awareness of your immediate place, and then no hierarchical structure or identification until you reach the planetary level. [00:03:05 - 00:03:14] I live in Sonoma County, and I am a citizen of Earth. I recognize no intermediate structures except when I have them. [00:03:14 - 00:03:20] [applause] [00:03:20 - 00:03:30] So I agree with Tim. I cheer on the people who present the protocols and plead their cases before these great-faced medical boards. [00:03:30 - 00:03:37] But in my opinion, you just circumvent all that. You go around it. It's irrelevant. [00:03:37 - 00:03:42] History has these dominator types by the balls. [00:03:42 - 00:03:45] [laughter] [00:03:45 - 00:03:51] History is a psychedelic experience. [00:03:51 - 00:03:54] [applause] [00:03:54 - 00:04:00] It's the collective unfolding of the dream of our species in space and time. [00:04:00 - 00:04:08] We are at the apex. This is the peak. This is the second hour of the trip. [00:04:08 - 00:04:31] [applause] [00:04:31 - 00:04:34] You're a human mushroom, Terrence! [00:04:34 - 00:04:36] (laughter) [00:04:36 - 00:04:39] (crowd cheering)
